I was born and raised in a city called Kanpur, it is in Uttar Pradesh. For those who think kanpur is the city of gutka and rajnigandha, I would like to introduce you to real Kanpur -

  1. The name of the city was Cawnpore and after wards it changed to Kanpur.

  2. Kanpur is one of the biggest centre of trade and commerce specially leather after the capital of country DELHI.

  3. It is one of the biggest city in india in terms of population.

  4. The world at large knows Kanpur as 'The Manchester of East' because of its large textile factories established by big British corporate houses with Elgin and Lal Imli (Cawnpore Textile Mills) to name a few. (If you don't know this you are only the person whom we call “kuye ka mendak”)

  5. It was one of the most important center to bring Industrial Revolution to the country. Most of these mills are defunct now because of lack of funds and care (old heritage not being kept alive by subsequent generations and same old story).

  6. Kanpur also served as an important military center for British.

Still you might think what makes it so different let me add some more details in it :

  1. Kanpur has the second oldest 9 hole half Golf couse in India after Kolkata.

  2. Kanpur has one of its kind in India the 'Indian Institute of Pulse Research'. The only Indian institute dedicated for pulse research and is run by central government.

  3. Kanpur traces its importance back to the age of Ramayana and there has been empirical evidence to support it. There are various utensils found dating back to the be nearly as old as this epic while excavating Jajmau Teela.

  4. Kanpur is the home of India's largest artificial limbs factory.

  5. It is the home of India's most widely read Hindi daily Dainik Jagran.

  6. Kanpur's Allen Forest Zoo is one of the few zoos in India created in a natural forest.

Other things like Ganga river, IIT kanpur etc which I suppose you might know. Now you may be thinking of why this post on kanpur so let me clear this. Since few days my friends are only making fun of my hometown by calling it city of rajnigandha , paan, gutka etc. Its their way of making jokes and insulting others or may be the ethics . But according to me, It is rude and condescending to say that to somebody, no matter where they’re from. There are, certainly, places in the world that are considered to be boring for whatever reason, but I am a firm believer that nobody has a right to judge or comment negatively about a person’s hometown.

I meet people from Jaipur that hate Jaipur. I meet people from Delhi that think it’s full of pollution. I also meet people from tiny towns that think their home is the absolute best place in the world to live. It’s all about perspective, and, unless you’ve been to a place and have some solid examples of why a place is so terrible, I’m going to call bullshit. Or you can say jo fal Kabi khaya hi nhi uske swaad ki burayi kyu krni ??

We have a rich history, and on top of all that, Kanpur is my city. It’s where I was born, and where my mom and dad and brother and most of my favourite people in the world were born, too.

It’s where I learnt a lot of what I know now. It’s where I laughed and loved and cried the most. It’s where I started to become who I am today. I don’t live there now and as I am settled in some other city for now, but it will always have a soft spot in my heart.

I’m proud to be from kanpur, even if you make jokes of gutka, rajnigandha etc. Guess what, my friends who just insulted my hometown again? It won't change the love for my city. It will only show your narrowness and your perception.
